JOSEPH WALTON ACA MAAT

Growing businesses hit financial growing pains long before they expect to. Whether it’s integrating acquisitions, improving reporting speed and accuracy, or creating one clear financial picture across multiple systems, these challenges can hold back decision-making and growth. That’s where I come in. I help leadership teams cut through the noise, align their financial processes, and build a single source of truth - giving them confidence in the numbers and the agility to act on them.

My Tiered Approach

For many business owners, getting the finance function under control can feel like a monumental task. That’s why I use a tiered approach - to bring clarity, control, and investor confidence step by step.

🟢 Compliance & Security

Get the basics right - accurate bookkeeping, tax compliance, payroll, and fraud prevention. Everything audit-ready from day one.

🟢 Real-Time Finance

Streamline month-end reporting and move to cloud or ERP systems. Access timely, reliable numbers that support smarter decisions.

🟢 Strategic Finance & KPIs

Reconcile data across platforms, build KPIs, dashboards, and forecasts. Turn numbers into clear, confident insight — and investor-ready reporting.

Change doesn’t happen overnight - but it also doesn’t have to.

The goal is steady, strategic progress. Together, we’ll build a clear roadmap to keep improving your finance function until it’s operating at the top of its game.

Compliance & Security

This might not be the flashiest part of finance - but it’s the most important place to begin. Before we run, we walk. That means making sure historical records are accurate and your business is fully compliant with Companies House and HMRC requirements, avoiding penalties and unwanted attention.

This stage involves speaking directly with you and your finance team to understand your current systems, reviewing past accounts, and digging into any audit comments or red flags.

A critical part of this is fraud prevention. Fast-growing businesses are among the most vulnerable to internal fraud and UK companies lose over £158 billion a year to fraud overall - most of which is internal. That’s why things like segregation of duties, while not exciting, are absolutely essential.

Compliance gives us the stable ground we need to build a modern, strategic finance function.

Real-Time Finance - Getting the Right Information, at the Right Time

Next, we focus on making sure your business has access to accurate, timely financial information. That means producing clear month-end reports shortly after the period closes - not months later.

It starts with a simple but important question:

Is your current accounting system still fit for purpose?

For many growing businesses, the answer is no. Legacy systems can’t keep up with increased complexity, and new tools or tighter controls are often needed.

That often leads to a migration - moving your data to a new system more suitable for your size and operational needs. Whether that’s Navision, D365, NetSuite, or something else, it’s important to approach the move strategically from day one.

I have deep experience leading migrations in Navision and Microsoft Dynamics 365, but I won’t recommend a system just because I know it. We’ll work together to find the best fit for your business. I don’t claim to be an expert in everything, but I know the right people. I collaborate with a trusted network of software specialists, including NetSuite consultants, to help guide more technical decisions when needed.

My role is to bridge the gap between you, your team, and the technical consultants. I make sure everyone is aligned - offering support and training to your team so that when migration day arrives, your finance function is ready. Whether it’s Treasury, Purchase Ledger, or the managment accountant, everyone knows what they’re doing and why it matters.

Strategic Finance & KPIs - Turning Insight into Action

At this stage, your finance function has matured: compliance is tight, reporting is timely, and systems are fit for purpose. So what’s next?

Now comes the most rewarding part, turning your financial data into business intelligence.

With clean, reconciled data at your fingertips, we can start to connect the dots across platforms. Maybe your inventory system contains valuable data that’s never been properly linked to your accounts. Or your CRM - like Salesforce - holds key sales insights that have never been fully reconciled with your ERP.

This is where we move from reporting the past to shaping the future.

Together, we’ll identify the KPIs that really matter for your business and build dashboards that bring those insights to life. Whether it’s customer acquisition cost, gross margin by product line, or cash conversion cycles - we’ll design metrics that are tailored, accurate, and actionable.

From here, your business has the clarity and confidence it needs to make faster, smarter decisions - and present investor-grade reporting with confidence.
